Structured Chaos

Howdy do folks!

As promised previously, I would let everyone know exactly what is was that I had decided with my blogging/writing life. Well, today is that very day that we've all come to dread. To quote The Clash, Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Well, suffice to say, I am staying here. Kind of. That is to say, I'm still sticking with blogging, although there will be a few changes.

1} I'm cutting my blogging here to just twice a week, with the plan being Mondays and Fridays. This could change to different days due to an upcoming change at work which will be fully explained later in in the post.

2} I started a new blog over at the dark side, called Father Nature's Mountain (yes, I know, not very original). It will be mostly a photo blog, since that seems to be the easiest thing to post over there. No official link as of yet, because it will be a Wednesday only blog. Once that post goes up on 10/15, I'll provide the link to there here.

In other sordid news, I took the next step with The Inner Sibling and the goal is to have a print release in November. Factoid, I went through that manuscript for the 7th (and I hope final) time to find & fix any and all typos. Reality check, I'm figuring it will cost me a minimum of $235 per release of what  I already got in the can (two novellas and a short story). This is not due to paying someone to publish, but paying people to create book covers and to professionally format for e-book/print release.

Remember I mentioned later? This is later. Due to a key agency policy change, our unit was able to get a positive answer to the question of flex scheduling at work. For us, flex scheduling will be a bi-weekly schedule of four 10 hour days in the first week (payweek) and the normal five 8 hour days the second week. Due to the multiple payrolls (including a facility) that I'm responsible for, I chose a flex schedule, which takes effect on 10/17. Which means that going in early (7:30 start time) and going home late (6:00 end time) for half the work week will make G.B. a very grouchy person for the next month or so.

  1. Welcome to the dark side of posting! AKA posting less and with more pictures. We know all about that.

Also, going through a manuscript 7 times? That is dedication!

  2. Good luck with the new regimen at work GB and lots and lots of good luck with the book release.

  3. Long hours, but you will have one full day of freedom.
Sounds like a good blogging schedule. Let us know when the other blog is ready to rock and roll.

  4. ABFtS: I've always found posting just pictures was the easy way of blogging, but at this point, I'm willing to come up with new captions for both old and new photos

7 times isn't as bad as it sounds like. Because Word13 doesn't allow you to save a document written on an earlier version under the same name, I had to go through it all over again and fix the typos that were originally fixed for the e-book version. So more like irritating redundancy than dedication.

Fil: Thanks. It's gonna be a killer for a little while as trying to seriously relax those time management skills is going to be a major headache.

Alex: This is true, and with this one full day of freedom, I actually have an official three day weekend every other week (Monday is my permanent day off for that new schedule.

And I will definitely let everyone know about the new blog, as I think I got the comment thing over there pretty much set so that you don't have to set up an account to comment.

  5. GB I can so understand the whole grouchy part when adjusting to new schedules. I've gone through it myself just the past month. And we're now heading into our busy time of the season. Even though I have a virtual work from home job the hours still take some adjustment even with good breaks in the 12 hour day.

I hear you on blogging too. Long days just aren't conducive to blogging visits or coming up with multiple blogs through the course of the week. Energy and active grey matter is not happening. I'd rather have a couple of good posts and enjoy the process than moaning over or regretting the whole blogging routine. Somewhere one has to have down time as well. :-)

Kudos on the new book and the smarts to have a professional design the cover and help with formatting. It pays off in the long run.

  6. Sia: Thanks for stopping by to comment.

12 hour day? Woah, that is definitely a major adjustment to make. Mine was really a no-brainer on the part of my employer, because the only other option available (paying major quantities of overtime) even though they were willing to pursue, in the long run wasn't very viable.

I agree that long days aren't optimal for blogging, which necessitates the current tweaking I'm undergoing.

I know what my limitations are, so paying someone to do it right was the smart thing to do.

  7. If you're only going to be grouchy for a finite amount of time, you are a much better person than me!

  8. M: At work, finite. At home, different story.

  9. I will enjoy watching for your blog posts to pop up on my sidebar as you are motivated to speak.

  10. G.A.: Oh I'm motivated to speak alright, it's just the process of putting those spoken words to computer screen that does me in from time to time.
